Meri Delhi Meri Shaan

Delhi ... My city, My home

Well, a topic close to my heart.
Delhi, a city full of memories for me …
I was born there, walked my first step, & did all my education there.
The city is old, new, vibrant, dull, charming, vast, alive & kicking. It fascinates me anyway :)
& I am likely to be there next weekend. It’s a short trip, of 8-9 days.

Found this wonderful piece of video which describes the real essence of Delhi :)

(Dis)Advantages of being an Indian

Just a few I could figure out

1. Pakistan is your neighbour
2. Bomb blasts are common. Well because as mentioned in point 1, Pakistan is your neighbour
3. Terror attacks can happen, again, as mentioned in point 1
4. Kashmir issue remains eternal headache. You are right, refer point 1
5. A mockery named Election takes place every few years
6. You are governed by your (goverment) servants
7. Police is available, at a price !!
8. Laws are there, & so are outlaws :)
9. You get water from municipality, few hours a day, which you can drink, only after filtering through Aqua-Guard
10. You get electricity 40-80% of the month, but you get billed for full
11. You have news channels more concerned about celebrities' diet-charts than citizen's woes
12. There is only one traffic rule : No rule
13. There is one more traffic rule : The ownership of the road is directly proportional to the cost of the vehicle being driven
14. The largest rail network makes sure the train reaches on time. Hey, don't bother about the date
15. Air India is as much proud of its aircrafts, as you are for Air India
16. Roads are there, sometimes in between potholes
17. Meters never work in Auto rickshaw & the auto-drivers are oblivious to other traffic elements
18. If you have always been an atheist, an auto ride can make you believe in God
19. Begging is fashion & Temples, Mosques are fashion hubs
20. All bills are submitted on the last day

Daily Thoughts

"Doors closing" ... tututututututut ... whamm.
"Next Station, City Hall Interchange" - says the recorded voice.

I am looking around for a corner to stand & cover few more pages of "Fountainhead" before getting down at "Raffles Place Interchange". Everybody is quiet & quite busy within themselves. Hardly would you notice someone staring at you, something I am not used to, being from Delhi. In the last two months' travel, I have hardly ever spoken to anybody in MRT (i.e. Metro to Delhiites).

Couples can be seen arms in arms. Mothers taking children to school. Workers going for the construction site, & am travelling to the software factory. Nobody is rushing for a seat, though many are standing. Say "sorry" if your existence bothers someone. Even if it's just a gentle unintentional touch or push. I try to imagine the same in Delhi, & it turns to nightmare.

This is what I experience every morning & evening while commuting to & from my office & home. It's been more than 2 months since I shifted here in Singapore, the city of possibilities.

While being in Delhi, I always dreamt of life like that... Nobody bothering nobody. No starings to good-looking Delhi girls. Courtesy for children & elderly. Vast metro coverage. Buses as a commuting option. Smoothly moving traffic, & most important of all, disciplined, law-fearing citizens & strict law & order.

I always wonder whether we can ever enjoy a good system in Delhi.

Today, it being the 60th Independence Day, I am missing the fun I used to have back in India. Along with my brother, I used to be one of the million citizens, flying kites to mark the celebrations. This year he must be celebrating with his friends. As for me, it's just another working day.

May God bless our country & countrymen with peace & prosperity
